I have good experiences with the LSI/Symbios/NCR 53c810- (or 53c810A-)
based cards (Symbis 20810, Symbios 8100, Asus SC-200, etc).
    The 53c810(A) is 8bit (50pin) Fast-SCSI, so it's ideal for external
stuff. I use an Ultra- or UltraWide-Hostadapter exclusively for internal
devices, and another Fast-Hostadapter for external devices. This way, I
can have the full 1.5m cable range internal, and upto 3m external.
These cards are also very inexpensive, and well supported by all
    operating systems.
