I don't know that StarOffice is using Sane. I leapt to that
conclusion, I'm afraid. However, if it makes any difference, the
scanning frontend identifies my scanner as "umax:/dev/scanner"
just as xsane does. Is this format generic or unique to SANE?

As for the TWAIN, StarOffice was ported to Linux. I think that
OS/2 might have been the native platform (not that OS/2 has much
in the way of TWAIN). I was thinking that TWAIN may simply be
StarOffices internal default reference to the scanner driver,
irrespective of platform.
