Star Office and scanner

Just want to relate a nice happening to you, it put a smile on my face. You'll probably
say, well that is what is supposed to happen. :-)

I have a Umax Astra 610S and sane 1.0 installed. Both XSane and xscanimage work
well in the GIMP but required some manual intervention, i.e. I had to go into the
~/.gimp/plugins directory and manually make the appropriate links.

I installed StarOffice for Linux recently and was playing around with it. In the drawing
component, in one of the pull-down menus was an option for scanning. I clicked on it,
not expecting much as I hadn't told StarOffice about my scanner or about Sane.

StarOffice brought up it's own scanning interface/frontend and. lo and behold, knew
that /dev/scanner existed and was my Umax. Hmm, this is looking good. I threw
something on the scanner and clicked "Preview". Wow, it worked! No configuration
needed, it autodetected everything and worked out of the box. Even less fuss than in
PhotoShop!

Well, I'm impressed, anyway. :-)

BTW, I also have StarOffice for OS/2 and the OS/2 port of SANE installed.
Unfortunately, the OS/2 version of StarOffice doesn't have the scanning option that I
could find and there's no mention of scanning in the help files.

Cheers,
Rob
