Tried several scanners from the shop : Acer S2W 3300, HP 5300 Scanjet
but wasn't able to get them going despite installing many patches and
other stuff. Spent at least 3 days al together.
Then I bought an Epson 610 and it worked immediately, although with
some little quirks in Color scanning: the last few scan lines are
always gone.
However, that doesn't affect the quality: I only have scan a few
millimeters extra and postprocess the output with xv or imagick to get
it right.
Also bought an Epson 1240 yesterday and that took me 10 minutes. I only
had to add the vendor id to the scanner.h and recompile the scanner
module in 2.2.18. (Just one line). This one works flawlessly.
I'd say that Epson is far the best choice for Linux.
