Hello Nicholas,
it seems that the scanner does not respond to some of the very first
inquire commands. It recognized as an HP scanner because otherwise it
would have failed earlier.
Maybe it is a timing problem.
Please try to donwload the hpscan tool from my homepage and build it on
your machine.
If you have build it, set the environment variable SANE_DEBUG_HPSCAN to
128 and
start the command
hpscan /dev/scsi/sc1d5l0 -qerror
and
hpscan /dev/scsi/sc1d5l0 -reset 0 -qerror
and send the output back to me. The latter one will do similar things
like on startup of scanimage.
