acer 320p + redhat 5.2

When I run xscanimage, I get:
xscanimage: no devices available.

I have an Acer 320p scanner and am running redhat 5.2
I recompiled my kernel to add support for parallel ports.
I read all the docs I could find before consulting you people.
/dev/scanner is a symlink pointing to /dev/lp1
I have the correct read/write permissions to /dev/lp1 (but ran xscanimage as
root anyway just to prove it).
I checked the dll.conf file and uncommented only one line at a time, but got
the same results for each device I attempted to use. I looked at the config
file for each device and pointed them to work with a parallel port device (for
those which it applied to). I get the same results every time. Any ideas?
