Well, somewhere in the docs it says you need to use gimp 1.0.4 and I got
the same error as you until I upgraded to 1.0.4 and did a little hack
to get xsane to build with gimp. (I think there is a bit of a bug with
the configure script of xsane as far as recognising the libgimp exists).
