Problems with 2.4.4 kernel and scanning

            I seem to be having no end of trouble scanning under 2.4.4. I'll start
    xsane, click the aquire preview button, and then I get an error: 'Error
    during read: Error during device I/O'.

            The scanner sort of makes sounds as if it is trying to scan. In my
    messages file is:
    May 8 11:15:01 double kernel: scsi1:0:1:0: Command not found
    May 8 11:15:01 double kernel: aic7xxx_dev_reset returns 8194
    May 8 11:15:06 double kernel: Device not ready. Make sure there is a
    disc in the drive.

            Can anyone offer assistance?
