    You can use
    SANE_DEBUG_DLL=255 scanimage -L
    to find out in which backend SANE freezes. It may help to comment out
    this backend (if it's not the one you must use) in dll.conf.

    Did you check if the permissions of /dev/sg0 and /dev/sga are ok (rw
    for your user)? Did you also try as root?

    SANE_DEBUG_EPSON=255 scanimage -L
