Debian's unstable branch has already SANE 1.04 packaged, and on stable
("Potato"), I would suggest adding something like following (try to
    find a near-by Debian mirror):

     deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian woody main contrib non-free

to /etc/apt/sources.list and then "apt-get source sane". Then cd into
sane-directory and run "debian/rules binary" to build Debian packages.
