No, it's actually fairly commonplace these days. I can speak to this
issue as I'm an HP employee and have been working on Linux/Open Source
exclusively for the last ~3 years. Unfortunately, the amount of Linux
support is still quite variable but, as some of you noticed, good
things have started to happen: the DeskJet division released drivers
just recently. This is a big milestone because it's the first time an
HP consumer product division is explicitly acknowledging and
supporting Linux (and thereby most UNIX variants). More of this
undoubtedly will follow. Unfortunately, the ScanJet side of the
business (and in particular PhotoSmart), is not quite so far along
yet. Of course, this issue is dear to my heart and we are working on
addressing it; the recent hiring of Bruce Perens will help accelerate
the process, but even so it won't happen overnight. In the meantime,
the best thing you could do is to remind the HP divisions that Linux
support for their scanners is important to you, their customer. If
you do so in a firm but friendly manner and they keep hearing the
same/similar story, good things will come out of it.
Thanks,
