Here are some more hints for you in getting the scanner working. You'll need windows to dual boot. First boot windows and do a test scan, then reboot the machine (without powering down the scanner) and load linux. Upload any version of the firmware. It will give you a message about the old firmware and its version. This will tell you which file you should be using.
If you upload the wrong one, it often just sits there when you request a scan.
Next, run scanimage from a window that has SANE_DEBUG_SNAPSCAN=255 set and email us the results. Also, make sure that you first run "modprobe scanner" and that /var/log/messages says it loaded successfully and that your scanner is known.
Some other hints include 1) do not have /dev/scanner defined, 2) use "scanimage -d snapscan:/dev/usbscanner" only 3) Comment out everything in user snapscan.conf file but /dev/usbscanner 4) comment out everything in sane.conf but snapscan.
