    Hi,

First, I am new to this list and to sane, so feel free to point me to the
    obvious.

Second, a little background about what I am trying to do. When I was young
my parents and I did a 8 years (1978-1986) long trip around the
world (in a 41 feet boat). About 3000 slides have been taken, but they
haven't been stored properly and deteriorate rather fast (moisture [?] on
most of them). I plan to at least take a digital snapshot of them. I know
that the color and the quality of the original will be lost, but at least
    something will stay.

I grabbed a LS-1000 (which is not the best scanner for the job) and made a
few tests. Unfortunately, it looks like gamma correction is not supported
from sane. I spent a couple of hours hacking the sources of the backend
yesterday, and it looks like gamma was suported but get losts in various
    changes for the other scanners.

    So, the real questions:

1/ Can I find detailed specs of LS-1000 (in particular, the SCSI
    commands it supports) ?

2/ I _think_ I have read somewhere that the LS-1000 is 12 bits
internally. Am I right to beleive that there must be a way to send a 4096
entries Look Up Table to the scanner before the scan ?

3/ Can someone explain me what a pre-scan is (I guess that it is a pass
over the slide that the firmware of the scanner uses to set various scan
    parameters to reasonable values) ?

4/ I plan to do a little tool that do "autofocus + low-res scan + compute
    black/white point + create a LUT table with user-defined gamma + scan
the slide" as a poor man batch scanner. Would it be usefull ?

5/ I plan to buy a LS-2000 before doing te real scans. Do the infra-red
correction functions of the 2000 are correctly handled by sane ?

Sorry for the long mail, thanks in advance for any reply

    Cheers,

    --fred
