I don't know if this is related, but i have an HP 6350c (usb) that would do
the same thing when i tried to do a preview. Most of the time, when i
selected an area (as opposed to having it do the entire page) it functioned
properly, however i did have it still lock up on me a couple of times like
you experienced.. the lamp would move all the way to one end and it would
lock up. Turning off the scanner is the only cure.
