    The "Unknown SANE status code" is suspicious. But the error is
    correct in principle. "artec" is not a SANE devicename, try
    artec:/dev/scanner instead. This documentation bug is fixed in CVS.

    I don't know details about Artec scanners but maybe this information
    will be sufficient to locate the problem.
