I've heard it depends on the firmware that the scanner has. Versions
before 1.60 are buggy, and can cause these problems. It might be
interesting if you would tell which firmware it has.

By the way, which microtek backend is used for your scanner, microtek(1)
or microtek2? You might read the manpage for those backends, man
sane-microtek and man sane-microtek2. Ah, the microtek(1) manpage lists
    them.
Well, now i read the manpage, it says that the 600GS is grayscale-only,
but the 600ZS is not. Strange though, it seems yours is grayscale-only too.

    Manpage:
     Brightness and contrast broken.
The 600GS is grayscale only, and will lock up if
you select color. (Unfortunately, the 600GS and
                  600ZS are indistinguishable by software.)

You might like to set debug on, and see if it gives more, you can do:
            export SANE_DEBUG_MICROTEK=128
And see what it gives after that.
I wonder if the debug output is usefull, because the programmer of this
backend seems to have gone about half a year ago. Till now, no other
programmer has picked up the job.

Which version of Sane do you use?
I had a Microtek Pagewiz, which i could use under sane 1.0.1 with the
microtek(1) backend version 0.10. It didn't function perfect for me, i
got a lot of io-errors like yours, but it worked.
Sane 1.0.2 and 1.0.3 with the 0.12 backend didn't work for that scanner
    here.
Your Scanmaker II is a different scanner than my Pagewiz, but you might try
different versions of sane, and see what that Scanmaker II does.
