    it stores black and white images as 2 channel tiffs
    that nothing in linux can read.

    in other words, save as tiff, but be carefull about
    asking for tiff. if dealing with photoshop users, ask
    for PSD which the gimp can read and turn into a proper
    tiff. (at least proper for most unix apps)

    libtiff is so easy to use...
    makes it easy to just want to go with the generic
    interfaces and just move on to some other part of what
    your working on...
