I tried a different scsi card (an AIC2930) and it's back to working great.
So, the problem is either with the AHA1542 driver, the card or the cable.
(The connectors are different so I use different cables.)
And I'm dealing with an over-full alpha by putting the network card to
use and scanning remotely. Frankly, that works so smoothly that I might
as well leave it that way. So I'm happening and I'm happy about that.
