You note you use 2.2.12... what pcmcia driver version? This likely won't
help you at all but I've had better luck on various things with Alan's
13pre7 patches than with stock 2.2.12... none of the things are scanner
related though.

I've been fighting scanners on my systems for the last 2 months... I
finally went back to the crappy AHA-1505 ISA controller that cam with
the scanner and everything is working fine. My AMI MegaRAID card won't
handle narrow devices so I have to add my BusLogic card for that, my
BusLogic won't handle the scanner so I have to add the cheap Adaptec
controller. Basically I have 4 SCSI channels in a machine to handle 2
HDs, 1 CD, 1 CDRW, 1 Tape, and 1 Scanner.... pretty sad.

Mustek and Microtek scanners are popular and they suck. There are notes
about having to have special drivers or simply not working on both SIIG
and Mylex/BusLogic sites... and from people saying they don't work with
many PCI cards etc. From the sounds of things on this list AGFA and HP
seem to be good scanners... maybe UMAX but my personal experience with
UMAX low-end SCSI scanners is bad so I won't touch them. Personally I'm
watching HP USB scanner support.
