How to start new scanner

I've just downloaded sane, and my HP scanner is supported. However,
my Polaroid SprintScan 35+ (a 35mm neg & slide scanner) is not. I am a
programmer, but not of this nature. What would be a good way for me to
start trying to build support for the Polaroid? What would I need?

Any help appreciated.
