detecting the scan button

My HP ScanJet 5p has a scan button on the front. I've seen several
other scanners with one or more
buttons. Is there anyway to detect the scan button being pressed in a
program using the sane
API? I've found one program that does something like this using low
level scsi commands
specifically for HP scanners. I would like a better way of doing this.
