I'm not very sure about it, but sometimes it helps when specifying
the scanner type and device explicitly on the command line, e.g.:

xscanimage hp:/dev/sge
xscanimage epson:/dev/scanner

...or something like this.
I've used a HP scanner here at the office some very few times and there
were inconsistensies in the hp.conf and in the dll.conf files I think.
Maybe anyone else on this topic...
