I have HP ScanJet 4p and had same problems and after deleting this line scanner
works fine
My hp.conf:
/dev/scanner
and /dev/scanner is a symlink to /dev/sga and permissions to it is crw-rw-rw- a
made with chmod a+r,a+w /dev/sga.
