But the strings are per-backend, aren't they? The backend is the only place
where they can be reliably translated.
OTOH, don't forget that scripts should work regardless of the user's
language setting.
To avoid duplication of effort, perhaps translation could be put into a
middle-end (meta-backend, whatever you call it)... It would just translate
the strings and pass everything else through unchanged.
