sane-pre1.01 problems with dc210

I compiled sane-pre1.01 with the following shared libraries:

ii libc6 2.1.1-0.1 GNU C Library: shared libraries
ii libglib1.2 1.2.1-1 The GLib library of C routines
ii libgtk1.2 1.2.1-1 The GIMP Toolkit set of widgets for X
ii libjpeg62 6b-1.1 The Independent JPEG Group's JPEG runtime li
ii xlib6g 3.3.3.1-0 shared libraries required by X clients

This is on a Debian GNU/Linux kernel release of 2.2.1.

On my laptop, with no SCSI devices available, I ran xscanimage. It
hung on dc210:

[dll] dlopen()ing `/usr/lib/sane/libsane-dmc.so.1'
[dll] init: initializing backend `dmc'
[dll] loading backend dc210
[dll] dlopen()ing `/usr/lib/sane/libsane-dc210.so.1'
[dll] init: initializing backend `dc210'

At this point, xscanimage hung.

When I commented dc210 in dll.conf, everything worked fine and a pnm
interface popped up.

I consider this a bug in the dc210 backend, since each backend should
be able to return whether or not the hardware backend is present.
