Which scanners work best with SANE?

I'm sorry to ask what must be a FAQ on this list however there seems to
be no way to search the archives of this list on the SANE
homepage. I did run a search on dejanews and got some information
but I still have questions. I have obtained version 1.0 of SANE
and built most of it.

The scanner I hope to use is an Acer Prisa 610P. The P means
parallel port. I have pretty much concluded except for
the epson and Mustek which have very little parallel support
under SANE there are no other options under Linux.
I am considering getting the SCSI version of it instead.

Questions:

1) Does anyone know a place where sane-devel archives are searchable online?
Does someone want to set this up now?
I also suggest the creation of an FAQ for the web page

2) Will most SCSI scanners work with SANE? or only the
ones listed on the web page?

3) Does anyone know who makes the engine inside the Acer?
Is it compatible with any of the supported models under
SANE?

4) What scanners work best and are recommended for use with SANE
given my requirements listed below.

Requirements:

SANE support
At least 30 bit
600 x 1200 dpi
Transparency (ie: scan slides and negatives)
Bed at least 8 1/2" by 11"

Price: preferably around $200 US Dollars

Mustek seemed like a good option at first glance but sounds like it has a very
poor bundled SCSI card and would slow the machine down too much.

UMAX also seems to be a possibility (based on the number of messages saying most
models are SANE supported)

Any help would be appreciated!

Thank You!
