gimp plugin finding no scanner

i've got my hp scanjet plus working(!) and i've sent the patches to
david (did you get then, ok, david?). i'm now having problems getting
xscanimage to work as a gimp plugin.

my problem is this: sane cannot find the hporig device (eg. scanimage
-L returns nothing). this is not a problem when calling xscanimage from
the command line because i can simply specify the driver, but i don't
have this option when using it as a gimp plugin.

i've tried writing a wrapper script to insert the name of the driver at
various points in the command line but to no avail. xscanimage does not
appear to like a specified driver name on the same command line as a
-gimp switcb.

has anyone else had this problem?
