Microtek ScanMaker630 broken?

Hi,

I've just bought a Microtek ScanMaker 630 and tried to get it going
with SANE under Linux.
The distribution I use came with SANE 0.73, and had a couple of
problems with backend Microtek2 - which had already been reported on
this Mailinglist in June (seg.fault/premature crashes of scanimage,
xscanimage left X hanging,...). Also, scanned lineart pictures were
inverted (black came out as white and vice versa).

According to the Bernd's suggestion given then I got the improved
version of the backend: microtek2-0.3.tar.gz.
With it, things seem to work fine, at least for lineart, halftone, and
8bit Gray.

However, 24bit Color doesn't quite work properly. All my scans end up
with basically only two colors: a neon green instead of black, and
pink instead of white. Except for those colors, the picture pretty
much looks like the 8bit Gray one.
I wonder whether this is a problem of SANE/the Microtek2 backend, or
more likely a defect of my scanner?

I haven't tried the original software due to harddisk size
restriction. In my eyes, these colors seem to be so typical, that
an expert probably knows what's wrong with it right off hand.
Since I'm new to scanning and this is my first scanner, it would be
really nice if someone could give me a hint.

Thanks,
Matthias
