Thanks for the note on the UMAX 1220S. I checked the UMAX web site and then
priced it at a few sites, and it looks like a very good scanner for what I
want. It's nice to have a testimonial since Linux and scanning often clash.

You may want to check out the Ghostscript site,
http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/, about your printing problems. Once I set
up ghostscript and had to added a little print filter to better set the
colors. That filter was for an HP DeskJet, though. The section titled
"GAMMA CORRECTION" of http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/aladdin/doc/devices.txt
might help. Another part reads "For Epson Stylus Color Models not listed
above, the two stc500-Variants are likely to work besides stcany, but the
Gamma-Correction might be wrong." Maybe using a gamma.ps and experimenting
with the parameters of it will help. You can even scan your printed things
and check the colors. :) I hope it helps. FWIW, I've read that
color matching for printing is planned for GIMP 2.0 or 3.0.
