The canonical list of things to check:

- is /dev/sgd the right dev? (I think you checked this already)
- are the access permissions of /dev/sgd set properly?
- is SCSI generic support compiled into the kernel?

Incidentally, could I interest anyone in a getting a project going for
a graphical user interface that would allow to find, configure, and
manage SANE devices? Shouldn't be too hard for anyone good with guis
and GTK and it would be a very valuable tool to have.
