mustek problems in lineart mode

I'm using a skript like this to fax a page I just scanned:

scanimage --device mustek:/dev/scanner -l 5 -t 5 -x 190 -y 270 --resolution
200 --mode Lineart | pbmtog3 > /tmp/fax.g3
faxspool $1 /tmp/fax.g3
rm /tmp/fax.g3
----

This doesn't always work. The scanner simply stops in the middle of the page
and scanimage seems to hang. Using xscanimage the problem is the same. Other
modes than lineart work fine.
I've not yet find out under which circumstances (ca. 10%) the scan works.

Scanner is a Mustek MFS-12000SP, sane 0.62.
