i had a similar problem- in my case xscanimage just said 'can't resolve
symbol __iob".
delete all libs which belong to sane and install again.
as far as i know sane doesn't overwrite all libraries when compiling
over so you'll have to do that by hand.
i use linux 2.0.0, libc 5.4.33 mustek 600cd, aha1542
