Set SG_BIG_BUFF in /usr/include/scsi/sg.h to 1024*128 - 512.
This is the largest possible size to set. A larger buffer could
dramatically decrease start/stop overhead, but I don't know where
to get more bytes :-(

This sounds like the "scanner suicide problem" with mustek scanners.
If you hear a strange noise then you should immediately turn off the
scanner. Last year I had 600 II SP which destroyed itself this way
(under NT) because Mustek seems to ignore the need for end position
sensors.
With the 1200SP this can happen, too, but this scanner seems to be more
robust.

Sometimes the scanner can be confused after aborting a scan, but at
present I could not reproduce this.
