    Hi,

       just to let you know that I solved my "scanner scans only garbage"
    problem. What I had overlooked was that somewhere between the 2.4.1 and
    2.4.5 kernels the aic7xxx driver has been replaced by something "new".

    This "new" thing seems to be the source of all my trouble (I'll
    contact the author/s in a separate mail); switching to "aic7xxx_old"
    in the kernel config did the job.
