In your first message you said that it worked fine with SuSE 7.0.
Do you still have the CDs? If so, try to install the old Sane package
(you can also download it from SuSE's web/ftp site). If it works
with the old package running on the SuSE 7.1 kernel, we know that the
problem is with the Sane package, if it does not work it's related
to something else.
