If the scanner hangs, try switching off the scanner, then rmmod the
buslogic module and maybe related modules (sg, scsi_mod). Then switch on
the scanner again and insmod buslogic. Maybe that helps.

And: try the SANE cvs snapshot to get the newest version of the backend.
If you still get hangs, there may be solution using a different
read_image_status scsi-command. Contact me if you are at this point.
