While we are updating the SANE specification, parhaps it is time to
document the return values for sane_init()?
SANE_STATUS_GOOD is clear, but what about the other values. Is it OK
to call any of the other sane_* functions if sane_init() failed?
The dll backend do not call sane_exit() if sane_init() failed, and I
believe this should be documented as the correct behavour.
When I proposed this last time (1999, check
<URL:http://www.mostang.com/mail-archive/sane-devel/1999-04/0166.html>)
I suggested a patch, but it was never accepted. I suggest looking at
it again. :-)
