Just wanted to let the folks who've been so helpful with my struggle know
that I finally achieved success with Umax 600s + Adaptec 2906.

I sort of cheated in the end. I replaced my Mandrake 7.1 install with 7.2.
Actually the real difference may have been simply that the card wasn't
installed (in fact I hadn't even bought it) when I originally installed 7.1.
I followed all the advice I was given when I installed the card but I
suspect the setup was never quite right. With the 7.2 install the adaptec
drivers show up at boot time and everything seems happy.
