    ... and this is IMHO the wrong approach. The right way to do it would
    be to implement one function in the backend that would report the
    button status. This way the "button scan daemon" would work with
    every backend that supports this function.

    The Fujitsu approach wont work with USB scanners, by adding it into
    the backend the interface type does no longer matter, because the
    backend would know how to query the scanner.
