Also spent about a day 2 weeks ago on a HP5300 with roughly the same
problems: recognized, but would work. I wrote HP but they said they
didn't support Linux !
To quote the response from HP :
"We are sorry to inform you but, the 5300c series scanner is not
supported in an Linux operating environment. At this time we have no
scanner that is supported in a Linux environment. Provided below are the
system requirements for your 5300c series scanner."
Then I persuaded the reseller to take the 5300 back and change it for
an Epson 1240. This one worked out of the box : I spent about 10 minutes
from unpacking the thing to scanning my first image ;-)
