Not having a UMAX 600S prevents me from really providing an opinion. I
am using an Adaptec 2940AU with a UMAX 1220S with good success. I've
also used the same scanner with an Adaptec 1542CF ( ISA card ). I have an ASUS
motherboard which has the onboard BIOS for their PCI-SC200 ( 53C810 Chip )
which has also worked quite well which was less than $100CDN new.

You may be able to find any of the mentioned cards on the used market
    for reasonable prices.

    Good luck.

    Cheers,
    Rod
