There is a beta level backend for a number of scanners
called "viceo". It supports the Visioneer 8600, Genius
ColorPage Vivid Pro USB and a number of other USB
    scanners.

You need two sets of components so you need to add two
    sites for its support

OneTouch 8600 Sane driver page -
    http://www.littlecms.com/iphoto/otlinux.htm

Genius ColorPage Vivid Pro USB -
    http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/stevenel/scanner/index.html

At present there are still a couple of issues but it
will produce scans using the standard sane based
    tools.
