Perhaps sane_init should ALWAYS refer to the distribution, and a new
call could be added to deal with the versions within. At the minimum,
I'd like backend/dll.c to return the MAJOR/MINOR/REV associated with
the whole distribution instead of MAJOR/MINOR/0. (Did you notice that
dll ignores specific backends return values, provided the MAJOR numbers
match?)
