system hangs after scan

UMAX 1200S
Adaptec 2940
Kernel 2.2.15 patched for IDE

I have the 2940 support compiled in, and the SCSI CD and SCSI
generic parts as modules. I can run "scanimage" or even
use "xscanimage" but after the scanner runs (and creates a
PNM file) the scanner parks, but it never ... finishes. I never
get my bash prompt back, so I have to kill -9 it from another
terminal.

Any ideas? I'm using a sane-1.0.1-4 rpm, and xsane-0.47-2.

Might it be SCSI related - is the adaptec 2940 a problem?
