    .. and by far the fastest, though TIFF with no compression will be quite
    fast too. If you have trouble with the scanner hesitating during a scan,
    switching to PNM can reduce the machine load enough to improve things.

    BTW Most TIFF output suffers the same IP problem as GIF, ie it uses
    the patented LZW compression method. Future versions of Gimp and XSane
    may not be able to write such TIFFs, though they will still read them.
