    where is this decision defined? I think you are right with your
    suggestion, I compiled the same source (1.0.2 from www.mostang.com) on a
    SuSE 6.3 machine and it worked just fine.

    Is there any standard way of doing this? I couldn't find something like a
    "configure --with-debug". Editing all Makefiles by hand is surely not the
    best solution...
