Basically the problem is that the UMAX Astra 2000U requires a specific
UMAX protocol to operate it. UMAX refuses to release information on this
protocol and hence SANE is unable to control it.

The USB driver just provides a mechanism to send and receive data from
the scanner using the USB scanner specification. The USB scanner
specification does not include anything about controlling the scanner.

Bang on UMAX's door but don't hope for much.
