Do you have the generic SCSI support (sg) compiled into the kernel or run as a
module?
I had forgotten to include the sg module and I had much the same errors as
you've got.
Now that I've included the line 'modprobe sg' in my /etc/rc.d/boot.local (SuSE
Linux 6.1) my scanner works fine!
