Dark scans?

I just got the HP Photosmart scanner and am finding the scans (I'm
doing slides at the moment) to be very, very dark when I view them
with xv or gimp. Is this normal?

I'm using Debian Linux (stable) and had been using the .7 release of
sane that comes with it. Yesterday, I got the sources to 1.0.1 and
discovered some new options. I added --ps-exposure-time=300% and can
now barely see a couple of highlights. I played with the brightness
and contrast controls but they just washed out the image.

Any other controls I can tweak? What about the the --gamma-table
option? Would it help? How would I use it?
