It just did this again when I tried inserting the aic7xxx module (after rebooting) -- I've got a portion of
/var/log/messages if anyone's interested. Do you think this might be some sort of hardware problem --
maybe an IRQ conflict or some such thing?

Doh...I just realized it dumps its output to stderr, not stdout. :) Anyway, I've now got the debug output
(rather large) if anyone's interested.
